SBS is currently delivering external repair works for Denbighshire County Council, and a range of insulation and re-roofing works for Wrexham County Borough Council. These frameworks recently gave us the opportunity to deliver some added social benefit in the form of two local charity fundraising initiatives.
The end of September saw the return of an annual event for MacMillan Cancer Support, known as "the World's Biggest Coffee Morning." SBS Resident Liaison Officer, Jacquelyn Evans recognised this as an opportunity to do something with the local communities and set about organising two separate coffee mornings. One would take place in Rhyl on 28th September and the other would be held in Wrexham on the 29th.
To maximise the impact of the events, Jacquelyn sent out emails to the two clients and various subcontractors in order to rally support. The supply chain partners gladly lent their support to the plan and helped to promote the events as well as assisting with the fundraising itself. The team produced promotional fliers, which were delivered to all residents on the two schemes. To host the events, Jacquelyn used the Denbighshire site office and - at the suggestion of a local resident - a community centre in Wrexham, which subsequently offered to accommodate visitors free of charge. SBS staff prepared the rooms accordingly and purchased the necessary cakes and refreshments.
The events provided a good opportunity for local residents to get together and maintain community bonds. Importantly, they also helped to raise funds for Macmillan. Sales of drinks and cakes, together with donations from SBS and the supply chain partners - scaffolding companies, skip providers, heating engineers etc. - ultimately raised over £450 for the charity.
